Biological systematics is based on ideas about hierarchy and ranks. Development went from popular views on the names and system of the living, through the logical ordering of the system of parts among the followers of Aristotle to the construction of a taxonomic system. To create taxonomic concepts, it was necessary to significantly change the logical apparatus, use the idea of a complete list of natural objects, and change the concept of an observer. The development of the concept of rank is included in the history of the scientific revolution of the XVI-XVII centuries. and is one of the key ideas of the new rationality. The emergence of fixed ranks in biology in Cesalpino, Linnaeus and in the systematics of the 19th century is considered. Comparison of concepts of rank in systematics and rank in number systems allows us to understand the patterns of development of these concepts in culture before the advent of science and their change with the emergence of scientific knowledge.
