Before us is an attempt at an intellectually responsible and politically unbiased description of the socio-political processes taking place in Hungary after the "velvet" regime change at the turn of the 1980-1990s. Seemingly devoid of the immediate drama that characterized the transitional processes in the Balkans, the Hungarian situation is characterized by a political tension that is both unique and symptomatic for many modernizing societies, bordering on social division.
