During the 3rd century AD, the Roman army changed emperors every year or six months. The Roman Empire was torn apart by civil strife, the country's economy was chiral. Inflation, the depreciation of cash, unemployment, and all their attendant social problems became well known to the population of the Empire. The borders were cracking under the onslaught of barbarians seeking to take possession of the wealth accumulated over the centuries.
