The monograph reveals the Christian foundations of Gogol's worldview throughout his career. In detail, with the involvement of preparatory materials, memoirs, historical and literary sources and everyday realities, the main Gogol works are analyzed: art cycles "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka," "Mirgorod," the so-called "Petersburg stories," the comedy "The Inspector General," the poem "Dead Souls," the book "Reflections on the Divine Liturgy." As a special subject of analysis, the history of Gogol's creative "dialogue" with critic V. G. Belinsky is traced. A close connection is established between Gogol's artistic and journalistic thought, "cross-cutting" and "nodal" themes are revealed that invariably arose in Gogol's works at each new stage of his spiritual development. The breadth of the coverage of the material makes it possible to show how Gogol's worldview is refracted in the writer's understanding of the most diverse problems of the depicted reality, and to designate in it the central "core" - love for patriarchal Russian life and criticism of European secularized material progress.
