Here we give a popular overview of modern scientific theories of the origin of the Universe, the origin of life and the nature of consciousness. Our main conclusion is that the reductionist picture of the world created by modern science cannot in any way be considered well founded. Therefore, in the final article, we outline an alternative approach that postulates the existence of the purpose of the universe, the existence of spiritual qualities and the impossibility of an exhaustive quantitative description of the world.
