We play with moves, but think with ideas. Ideas are the smallest structural units of a chess game, its atoms and molecules. It is tempting in this regard to present the history of chess as a history of ideas. Such attempts have already been made. Nimtsovich wrote that "in chess, in the end, only the world of ideas is interesting."
