The book is a historical study based on a collection of unique photographs taken in 1919-1920 by Merrill Haskell, the American secretary of the Christian Union of Young People, who worked in the financial bureau of the Vladivostok branch of YMKA. For Vladivostok, this collection is a real discovery. The life of the city has never been represented so fully in such a short period of time. Of the 430 photographs that make up Haskell's collection, 300 of the most interesting photographs were selected for publication. A little more than 50 photos were signed by Haskell himself, it took about two years of work to "decipher" the rest, as a result of which the locations of the photography were accurately determined, which have changed greatly or even completely by now.
