The book raises the problem of a correct understanding of the personality of the great Austrian composer, overcoming erroneous judgments allowed here, as well as the problem of clarifying the true boundaries of his creative heritage. One particular aspect of this last problem is the question of the completeness or incompleteness of the Unfinished Symphony, to which a special chapter is devoted. The book attracts important materials discovered only recently; some issues considered in it were not previously covered in the literature about Schubert.
