On Sunday morning, January 9, 1905, the workers of St. Petersburg, led by priest George Galon, moved to the Winter Palace. They believed that the sovereign was there and intended to hand him a petition about their needs and the needs of the entire Russian people. But the procession did not achieve its goal. The troops, aware of him in advance, were ordered not to let the workers into the palace, because a peaceful procession, as the authorities believed, could easily turn into a riot. Shots rang out. People's blood was shed. Blood was also shed from the city guards guarding the demonstrators.
