This collection does not pretend to present with exhaustive completeness the development of literature in Austria. Most of the short stories published in this book are translated "into Russian for the first time. The main task in compiling the collection was the desire to acquaint readers with the most significant short stories in Austria and, using examples of individual works, to show the main ideological and thematic directions characterizing the Austrian short story of the 19th century.
