The American Software, Film and Music Industry Associations have funded extensive global piracy research efforts over the past two decades, for the most part for themselves. Piracy, despite its ubiquity, was an unplowed field for independent study. Empirical work over the past ten years, excluding partly research on file sharing (file sharing), has been rare and concentrated in narrow areas.
