For the first time in the history of Russian science, the holistic process of the emergence, formation and development of archival studies of the 16th - early 20th centuries is analyzed. An extensive set of archival documents and other sources is introduced into scientific circulation, on the basis of which the history of the development of archival thought in Russia is recreated.
