The book contains two science fiction works by K.E. Tsiolkovsky: "Dreams of the Earth and the Sky" and "On West." In the first of them, a scientist in the form of a fascinating story sets out his thoughts on various physical phenomena on Earth and in the Universe, describes a fictional interplanetary journey and the prospects for the settlement of the Cosmos by people. The work was written in 1895. In it, Tsiolkovsky first put forward the idea of ​ ​ creating artificial satellites of the Earth. Thematically related to "Dreams of Earth and Sky," the sketch "On West" is published for the first time. It describes the alleged living conditions on the largest asteroid in the solar system, observations and sensations of an astronaut who allegedly visited West. The story is sustained in the author's humorous tones, full of various kinds of details and calculations showing how comprehensively and heartfelt the scientist developed the problem of space travel.
