Demographic situation in Russia has improved significantly in recent years. According to preliminary data, the number of people born in Russia in 2013 for the first time in 20 years exceeded the number of deaths and natural population growth was achieved. To a large extent, this was due to the successful implementation of government policies to support fertility, reduce harmful alcohol consumption and develop the medical care system. In 2006-2012, Russia recorded the fastest birth rate growth in Europe and the second in the world. In absolute terms, the number of newborns in Russia that appeared in 2012 amounted to 1902 thousand, which is more than the 2006 statistical indicator by 422 thousand children.
