Almost half a century ago, in August 1918, the American artist Rockwell Kent, taking his eight-year-old son with him, left the "land of porcelain baths," from the cramped "stamped cities," from the atmosphere poisoned by the world war, to distant Alaska. There, in the wilderness, breathing the clean air of peace and freedom, they spent a long, harsh winter in almost complete solitude.
