The decade since Alekhine's death has been widely celebrated in the Soviet and foreign chess press. It was decided to hold an international chess tournament in memory of Alekhine in Moscow with the participation of world champion Botvinnik, four other strongest Soviet grandmasters and eleven champions or strongest chess players from foreign countries - one from each, in order to most widely represent the diversity of modern chess culture.
