Stalinist regimes in the USSR and Eastern European countries suppressed any critical reflection on their societies and on the means of changing these societies. However, as numerous samizdat works show, in extremely difficult conditions, risking prison and exile, many people try to understand and explain the essence of the so-called real socialism.
