An unknown disease has killed more than 90% of children in the country. Survivors gained strange, frightening abilities. All of them are now kept in concentration camps, deprived of freedom, familiar life and individuality. Ruby spent six long years in the camp, but eventually managed to escape. Joining a group of other escapees, she searches for the East River - a place where people like her can feel safe. During this long journey, Ruby will have to decide more than once whether the freedom of those sacrifices that will have to be made for her sake is worth it.
