Gorgiev: "In preparation for printing the collection of sketches, I selected the best for him from a thirty-year period. The greatest difficulties arose in the distribution of studies into groups. The experience of existing attempts to classify studies in collections according to the chronological principle, according to the ratio of material or according to the ideological basis did not give successful examples, and therefore in this brochure there is no single principle in the distribution of studies by chapters. Studies were combined into separate groups based on the most characteristic features uniting them. In some cases, such a sign was the ratio of the material, in others - the ideological complex, etc. - depending on the severity of a particular moment in the sketch."
