In the work of S.V. Bolotov, the collapse of the illusions of the Soviet leadership regarding the use of the Moscow Patriarchate to resolve certain foreign policy strategic tasks of the Soviet state is described in detail. One of these failures was the well-known Moscow Pan-Orthodox Conference of 1948. The attempt to oppose Orthodox unity to those international political forces with which the USSR was not on the way failed. Stalin's "system of Orthodox unity led by the Moscow Patriarchate" extended only to the so-called "countries of people's democracy" and briefly survived the collapse of the Soviet Union.
