Since 1986, the Arctic Integrated Marine Expedition (IACE) has been operating on the islands, archipelagos and the continental coast of the Arctic Ocean under the Program for Integrated Research of the Historical, Cultural and Natural Environment of the Arctic (1986-2000). The main task of the expedition is to identify and study monuments of the history of the development of the Arctic (from ancient times until the 50s of the XX century), study the problems of interaction between Man and Nature in the Arctic (historical ecology) and develop recommendations for the integrated preservation and rational use of the historical, cultural and natural environment of the Arctic (including the problems of traditional nature management, ecology and small peoples of the North). Thanks to MACE studies in the Arctic region (on the islands of Vaigach, Dolgiy, Matveeva, Kolguev, on the Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land archipelagos, on the Chukchi Peninsula, in the Bolynezemelskaya and Malozemelskaya tundra), more than two thousand unique objects have been identified and studied - monuments of the history of the development of the Arctic. For the first time, Stone Age tools were discovered on Vaigach, Novaya Zemlya, Franz Josef Land. Underwater studies of monuments in the hydrosphere, historical experiments on navigation in the seas of the Arctic Ocean, the study of technologies for the development of the Arctic in various historical periods, the traditional culture of the peoples of the North, and topical environmental problems are being carried out.
