Blackie - English philologist, poet and political writer, born in July 1809 in Glasgow, attended lectures at Eberdin and the University of Edinburgh, studied in 1829-30. in Göttingen and Berlin, German literature and classical philology and, visiting Italy, devoted himself upon returning to his homeland to literature, mainly German, giving in 1834 a translation of Goethevsky's "Faust" (2nd ed., 1881) with notes and comments.
