The book is devoted to a versatile study of the musical text in the films of Andrei Tarkovsky. Music exists in the master's films as a multi-layered developing phenomenon. The soundtrack captures the evolution from discreteness to continuality, from the fabled conditioning of sound drama to its semantic identification with the universal musical concepts of various eras and cultures (from European baroque to Zen meditation). This is the first time a similar approach to the study of cinematic text has been applied.
