Monograph on variational methods for solving boundary value problems for equations of elliptic type. The approximation of various functional spaces and operators acting in these spaces is presented. Particular attention is paid to the approximation of Sobolev spaces by spaces of piecewise polynomial functions. This mathematical apparatus is further used to construct and study approximate methods for solving various boundary value problems.
