The subject of the work is the history of serfdom in Russia in the second half of the 17th century, that is, after the adoption of the Cathedral Code of 1649. Archival materials predominate in the work. Much space is given to the attachment of peasants to the land the search for fugitives on the southern outskirts of Russia.
