North African Theater Campaign 1940-43: The Allies fought for control of North Africa against the German Afrika Korps commanded by the legendary Erwin Rommel. But the role played by Italian troops on this front, especially the elite armored divisions that supported the Germans, has not been studied as thoroughly as the actions of British and German troops. This study examines in detail the participation in the campaign of three Italian armored divisions - Ariete, Littorio and Centauro - and their important contribution to Rommel's victories in 1941-43.
