French prose writer and playwright, best known for bright and fascinating stories from the life of Provence. Born in Nimes (Provence). From a young age he worked as a school teacher. An autobiographical novel "The Kid" (1868) tells about this difficult period and the move of a seventeen-year-old boy to Paris.
