Born in Moscow in a German family. After the early death of his father, he spent his childhood in poverty. He graduated from the course of the German school at the Lutheran Church of St. Peter and Paul in Moscow. Then he was a student for three years in a pharmacy, later a pharmacist at Moscow University, while attending lectures on philology.
