When Hitler ordered the launch of Operation Barbarossa, millions of German soldiers flooded Russia, believing that their quick blitzkrieg tactics would lead to an easy victory like the one the Wehrmacht had over Poland and France. But the vast manpower available to the Soviet Union, as well as the considerable distances and overstretched supply lines that the Germans were supposed to provide, caused the seemingly invincible armored wedges to slow down.
