The basic principles of the structure and properties of various types of solid materials are outlined. Classification of materials is given, a wide range of methods for studying their functional properties is presented, physicochemical effects and processes underlying their use are considered. Attention was paid to new materials with special properties, a number of innovative developments in nanomaterials and the development of priority areas of fundamental materials science were highlighted.
