The relatively early identification of Carian inscriptions as such is largely due to the information about the Carians contained in the works of ancient authors, and above all in the "History" of Herodotus: Carian inscriptions were found in those areas of Asia Minor and Africa that appear in ancient sources as places of resettlement or stay of the Carians.
