V.V. Latyshev already from school devoted himself to the study and publication of Greek inscriptions of the South of Russia, fully aware that this was the primary task of Greek epigraphy in Russia. V.V. Latyshev carried out an epoch-making work - publication in excerpts and translation of ancient literary sources (Greek and Latin) about Scythia and the Caucasus under the name Scythica et Caucasica - "News of ancient writers, Greek and Latin, about Scythia and the Caucasus" (vol. I in three issues - Greek authors, vol. II in two issues - Latin authors) 1890-1906 this collection of extracts became the Bible for every student of the history of the Northern Black Sea region.
