On the eve of World War I, German designers gained some experience in creating armored vehicles. The lightly armored Erhard VAK with a 50 mm anti-aircraft ("anti-balloon") gun became a sensation at the 1906 Berlin Salon, but was impractical. In the same year, an armored car without weapons was represented by Opel. Armed cars were tested in pre-war maneuvers. At the beginning of the war, German reconnaissance detachments were equipped with cannon-armed vehicles (subsequently used in the VET system) and minimal cover.
