In 1940 steam was the predominant form of motive power on the railways all over the world. In the ensuing 25 years the most complete metamorphosis came over the railways of the world--the most astonishing change in traction since steam locomotives replaced horses. In 1965 there remained no more than a few pockets in Europe where steam locomotives were in regular use.
