Modern Switzerland Northern Italy are inhabited by peoples who are usually united under the common name Romansh. These are remanshi (romanshi), ladins and friuls (furlans). Friuls inhabit mainly the province of Udine - a vast space between the Livenza River and the upper course of the Piave River in the west, the Carnian and northwestern part of the Julian Alps to the north, the Isanzo River in the east and the Adriatic Sea in the south.
