Of the 8,600 species of birds living on Earth, about three-fifths are passerine songbirds. They represent the most common group of birds and can be found on all continents and in a wide variety of natural conditions - from river banks or ponds to high mountains, rainforests or dry steppes to cold northern taiga and tundra.
