The Liturgy of the Hours is a prayer uttered on behalf of all the People of God and thus expresses the communal character of the Church. According to existing church rules, the Liturgy of the Hours is not the responsibility of the laity, unlike the priesthood and monks, who are ordered to perform every day (individually or in communities) all services of the daily circle. However, the Church strongly recommends that laity, if possible, regularly participate in the Liturgy of the Hours or read the Hours on their own, in a more simplified and short form. For these purposes, the main part of the Liturgy of the Hours collection, the Four-week Psalter, can be used.
