In 1832, special manager Edmond Roberts began a tour of the East to impose enslaving unequal treaties on Southeast Asian countries. At that time, the American government assigned him the task of immediately examining the possibility of aggression in Korea. He carried out a multifaceted activity to fulfill the task and, after his voyage on May 13, 1834, in a report to the head of the State Department, clarified the real possibility of opening the way to trade with Korea. In addition, American capitalists involved in the opium trade in the East plotted to hire a German missionary and send him to Korea to directly clear the way for aggression.
