Basic concepts, physical concepts and a brief overview of laboratory and field studies of river turbulence are given. Features of probabilistic structure of channel relief and, in particular, channel microforms are considered. The results of field experiments on river sections with a flat, ridge and pebble-boulder bottom are summarized. Much attention is paid to the physical interpretation of the identified patterns and the construction of a conceptual model of river turbulence.
