In this work, Berman analyzes the modern era in detail and concludes that modern European law has been in the deepest crisis since its inception in the 10th century. He created the concept of "integrative jurisprudence" as a philosophy uniting three classical schools of law: legal positivism, the theory of natural law and the historical school of law (mainly German)
