The fundamentals of the science of vegetation cover are outlined: the subject and tasks of science, a brief history of the formation of vegetation cover, physical and geographical factors of botanical and geographical diversity, plant communities are considered as the main initial units of the botanical and geographical characteristics of the territories, ecological and landscape factors of geobotanical diversity are analyzed.
