People discovered another land, and then lost it. Those who remain on the other side are forced to adapt to the world around them - hard radiation, someone else's atmosphere and gravity. All that is available to them on the planet is one huge island from which you cannot escape. This is a world where there are familiar plants and animals, but no oil and gas. A world where people occasionally have superpowers that they cannot even really use.
