The idea of ​ ​ "Plutonia" was born to Obruchev after reading Jules Verne's novel "Travels to the Center of the Earth." Vladimir Afanasevich decides to write a book for young people on the same basis, but without the free assumptions inherent in Verne's specified novel. He turned dry science, which deals only with scattered bones and strange prints on the stones and bears the difficult name "paleontology," into a fascinating science fiction novel. To do this, the author used the hypothesis of the existence of an open cavity inside the globe, which was seriously discussed by scientists at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries, and sent a scientific expedition on the Polar Star ship to search for this cavity.
