The success of the General History of Architecture of the French railway engineer, former associate professor of the Polytechnic School Auguste Choisy (1841-1909) was due to several reasons. First, the breadth of the author's plan: the books present the stages of the development of architecture of the prehistoric era; states of the Ancient East, antiquity, including India, China, Japan; European countries in the Middle Ages, new and modern times.
