The cruiser Varyag, who died in 1904 after an unequal battle with the Japanese squadron in the port of Chemulpo, became a symbol of heroism and valor of Russian sailors. But his story didn't end there. The Japanese raised the Varangian and introduced it into their fleet under the name Soya, and in 1916 they sold the ship to Russia. Having made the difficult transition from Vladivostok to Romanov-on-Murman (now Murmansk), the ship became part of the Arctic Ocean Flotilla.
