As times change, the demands on students of science and technology increase. They must know more and more at ever earlier stages of their education. Scientists and engineers have long recognized the need for good training in such subjects as thermodynamics and the properties of materials. During the twentieth century, as more fundamental thinking has invaded these disciplines, the study of the molecular structure of matter has assumed greater emphasis compared to the macroscopic studies. For example, thermodynamics alone is seen as inadequate for today’s undergraduate or graduate student, unless he is at least introduced to the mechanics of the atoms and molecules which gives rise to the observable phenomena of thermodynamics.
