For the first time in Russian historiography, the prerequisites, course and consequences of the events in Tomsk on October 20-22, 1905 were analyzed. The main reason for the acute conflict was the political moment of confrontation between liberal revolutionary democracy and "patriotic" ordinary people in order to suppress the activity of the former. The action itself (a procession through the city organized by the bourgeois society) expressed the reaction of the traditionalist strata of urban society to attempts by liberal-radical elements to limit or curtail autocratic structures. Local authorities lost control of the situation and objectively condoned the Tomsk "Black Hundreds," trying to defeat the "revolutionary hydra" with their help. The revolution took place in a multidimensional space, where factors of social antagonism and class heterogeneity played an important role.
