Index Librorum Prohibitorum - a list of publications that were banned from reading by the Roman Catholic Church under the threat of excommunication. Some editions of the list also contained instructions from the Church regarding the reading, sale and censorship of books. The official purpose of compiling the Index was to protect faith and morality from encroachments and theological errors.
