D.S. Likhachev assessed Textology as his main scientific work, to the ideas of which he returned throughout his scientific activity, but first formulated them in his doctoral dissertation on the history of Russian chronicles, prepared by him in 1947. In the second edition of the book (1983), D. S. Likhachev made a number of significant changes and additions, which was dictated by the emergence of new studies, the revision of some points of view on the issues raised in the first edition of the book.
