"Sevastopol Letters," written by the outstanding Russian doctor, writer and thinker Nikolai Ivanovich Pirogov (1810-1881), are a valuable epistolary monument of the mid-19th century. During the Crimean War, Pirogov offers his help to the government and goes to besieged Sevastopol to "use his strength and knowledge for the benefit of the army on the battlefield." In letters, he not only draws a picture of his medical activities, but also gives material of general importance, acting as a direct observer of military events, which makes letters an important documentary source for studying the Sevastopol defense.
